Top Chicago Films
Chicago Magazine came out with the top 40 movies filmed in Chicago. Here is there list, http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/June-2010/40-Best-Chicago-Movies-Ever/index.php?cparticle=1&siarticle=0#artanc
I have to say I think they did a pretty good job. Here are my top 5.
5. Hoop Dreams – A film about 2 kids from the PJ’s trying to make it to the top and rise above their environment. Sure, it also had some basketball in it. I don’t know anyone who didn’t watch this movie and not be moved by it. A brilliant film.
4. Ferris Buehler’s Day Off – Of all the John Hughes 80’s films this is my favorite. My wife is a Pretty in Pink fan and my brother will give a nod to Weird Science. Ferris Buehler came out my senior year of high school and caused me and my posse to try to re-live the experience as we cut school and drove our suburban teen asses into the big bad city. The movie gets a little sappy in the end (don’t all Hughes films suffer from this?) But, it is still funny and still after all this time works.
3. Risky Business – Before Tom Cruise was TOM CRUISE, he made what to me is still his best film, Risky Business. All of these years later and it is just an incredibly enjoyable watch. It made the sometimes you just have to say to yourself, what the fuck a 1980’s mantra. If you are a white male ages 38-43 and grew up in the burbs, I guarantee you like this movie.
2. The Blues Brothers – This might be the only SNL themed movie that was any good. Aykroyd and Belushi created two great characters that paid homage to truly great music. They also assembled a kick ass backing band.
1. The Fugitive – If this movie is on cable, I always put the remote down. It might still be my favorite adaptation from a TV show into a movie as well. A great story that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final battle. Tommy Lee Jones steals this one with a much deserved Oscar winning performance.
