Nick's Guide To Holiday Drinking

The holidays are here. Along with all the merriment, comes exchanging presents, dining on a nice Christmas ham, sipping some eggnog and for many getting drunker then an Irishman at a funeral. Unfortunately, this causes many amateur drunks to be out there causing problems for mainstream society. As a seasoned boozer, I have paid the price and learned many valuable lessons along the way, thus not placing an unneeded burden on anybody.

In reality I had a leg up. In my youth, I had my Uncle Dan there, to teach me how to drink and how not to drink. So, I have taken that advice and learned some of my own hard lessons, too become a pretty knowledgeable drinker. Yes, I still get hangovers and what not but, it is rare that I am the sloppy drunk who has lost control of all bodily functions, leaving my friends to take care of me.

With all of that said, in the sprit of the holidays am I going to offer, to the three people who read this blog a gift. I am going to impart all of my knowledge about drinking and give you Nick’s guide to being a functional drunk. You’re Welcome.

Like anything, be it running a marathon, climbing Mount Everest, or consuming a dozen Jaeger-bombs, the warm-up and training are crucial to one’s success or failure. If you only drink once or twice a year please, I beg don’t try to be a hero. Take it easy. Maybe just have some wine or a beer or two. If that is not an option and you need to get nice and stiff to fully enjoy the festivities with your family for the holidays well, try and follow this guide, and you may have a chance.

What you eat and when you eat it, are huge factors in your alcohol consumption. If you plan on dirking on an empty stomach, you are in trouble. You are better off, just sticking your head in the toilet at the beginning of the evening and save yourself the trouble later because, I can guarantee you, if you drink without eating you will vomit. With that said, eating while drinking is also not recommended. You need to give the food a chance to digest before you start consuming your Jack and Cokes. If you don’t give yourself the proper buffer time then, well the Christmas yams you just ate, will invariably be what you regurgitate out later that evening.

So, ideally what you want to do is eat a nice meal an hour or so before the heavy lifting begins. Something carb-heavy is ideal for soaking up all that alcohol. You don’t want to eat anything greasy. You want the least gas producing food you can think of before starting the proceedings. Pasta or a sub sandwich make perfect pre-game meals. Since this is Christmas and you are going to have to eat a Christmas dinner, the ham and turkey are fine as well as the mashed potatoes. Just remember don’t go overboard.

You have eaten your meal, let it digest and now want to grab the nearest bottle of Stoli and start getting numb. Well, go ahead but again be careful. If you start off drinking vodka, end the night drinking vodka. A common rookie mistake is changing liquors mid-way through the evening. This is usually a fatal mistake. If you start out drinking beer, and then decide what the hell, I will have a rum and coke, then proceed to start doing tequila shots, you are going to be in big trouble.

Staying with the same drink all night is very important. This is not easy as at some point when the buzz starts to kick in, logic goes out the window. It is very difficult to stay the course when someone is shoving a bottle of whiskey in your hand and calling you a pansy if you don’t take a shot. It is your choice but be warned, changing course midway through the evening is never a good idea.

Okay, so you are staying with Screwdrivers all night, that’s good. Now, slow down and enjoy your drink. This is not a high school kegger where you need to be home by mid-night or you will be grounded. There is no hurry. Relax and enjoy your refreshment. Slow and steady wins the race. The ultimate goal is to achieve a nice liquid personality buzz. If you start slamming them down like they are water, well you are going to have a problem.

I am not saying you need to put a nipple on your drink and sip the thing the whole night. You need to drink at a nice relaxed pace. Not to slow and not to fast. If you start slamming them early, you will never make it. Another common rookie mistake is trying to keep up with the biggest drinker at the party. That will only lead to you on your knees praying to the porcelain God. This is not a race. You are not drinking to impress someone. You are doing it to have fun. Cleaning vomit out of your hair the next morning is not fun.

So, you have followed all of the steps. You are tipsy but still upright. That still leaves the next morning. Now, you will still have a bit of a hangover. That is inevitable. However, to make the next morning when you are at mass listening to Father Chester Grabass, less of a struggle, just be careful how you end the night. A hangover is basically de-hydration. Drinking a lot of water right before you go to bed is a great way to avoid being hung-over the next morning. Also, as tempting as a nice midnight snack sounds be careful. You can eat but again play it safe. You don’t want to eat anything salty. That will only de-hydrate you more. Ideally, again some carbs to soak up the booze is a good suggestion.

What you eat for that late night snack can be the most important factor in how you feel the following day. In a drunken stupor again, bad decisions can be made such as eating a Hobo. This is a mistake that sadly, I have continued to commit. You can usually get one at most Greek diners in the city. Les Brothers makes a pretty good one. A hobo is a skillet containing scrambled eggs, melted cheddar cheese over hash browns. It sounds good, doesn’t it? And, it is very tasty. However, on top of all the booze you just had that cheese will act like a kind of liquid Draino in your bowels and you will literally be spending hours in the bathroom as your un-intentional enema does it’s damage.

Well, I hope that this guide will be help to those in need. Sadly, I still am prone to making many of the mistakes I have mentioned above. I consider myself a good drinker but one big problem that I have is doing things drunk that I would never do sober. I realize that there is a lot to follow, but if you follow this guide you should be fine the next day. And with that I wish all a very Happy Festivus.

The Booth

As a sports fan I listen and watch my fair share of sporting events. Sadly most broadcasts are lacking in quality. There are still some good ones out there but they are becoming drowned out by the boring, vanilla Columbia School of Broadcasting graduates, who dominate sports television. These rubes all look and sound the same. They never criticize and are about as exciting as a baked potato. We are lucky in Chicago to have some decent announcers. Here I will grade our local broadcast teams in town. I will not grade the Blackhawks as I haven’t listened or watched a Hawks game in years.

Chicago Cubs

TV: Len Kasper and Bob Brenly – Kasper and Brenly had a huge task in trying to replace Stone and Caray. Steve Stone was the absolute best I had ever seen doing analysis in any sport. Brenly, while no Stone isn’t that bad in his own right. He calls players out and offers his insight and knowledge of the game. Len Kasper, while being a tad bland is no worse or no better then most of his ilk. As time as gone on he has gotten more comfortable and more of his likeable personality has come out. Hopefully this continues as he seems to have a decent sense of humor. Grade B+

Radio: Pat Hughes and Ron Santo – Ah, the Pat and Ron show. The chemistry these two have in the booth is unmatched. If you are looking for a detailed account of the games going on, you are not going to get it. If you want to be entertained with a little baseball thrown in, well this is the show to get that. Pat Hughes is extremely underrated for the job he does as the Cubs radio voice. As much as I love Santo he is not the best analyst in the world leaving Hughes to do both jobs. Hughes does both and sets up Ronnie perfectly. His dry sense of humor and knowledge of the game are un-matched. Santo is like the old senile Uncle. He butchers names and stories but, at his heart he is the real deal. You can’t help but love Ronnie and root for him. Say what you want about the broadcast, but you can’t say it isn’t entertaining. Grade A-

Chicago White Sox

TV: Ken Harrelson and Darin Jackson – As a Cub fan I may be a little biased here, but I can not stand either one of these guys. Harrelson is a fool’s fool. He has more annoying personality traits then Paris Hilton. His out-dated lame catch phrases are tiresome. Grab some bench was cute in 1990, now not so much. I don’t mind being a homer but if something bad happens to the Sox he just stays silent. It is annoying as all hell. Plus he is such a Sox fan that he lets that cloud his judgment. Every Sox prospect is going to the Hall of Fame. Darin Jackson has gotten better over the years and might be tolerable if not for Harrelson. Still the broadcast is so dominated by the narcissist Harrelson that it is difficult to judge Jackson. Grade D

Radio: Ed Farmer and Chris Singleton – As I stated I am a Cubs fan. However, when Farmer was with John Rooney I would listen to the games on the radio because I thought they were really good at what they did. Sadly, with Rooney’s departure the White Sox radio broadcast has become a train wreck befitting of a single A ballclub. Ed Farmer as a play by play man is miscast. He was a great analyst but that is what he should be doing. By sticking him with his current role you basically neuter him. He tries but no one could make Chris Singleton listenable. This guy does not offer anything to a broadcast. Green beyond belief, Singleton never showed improvement. Stumbling over words, not being able to verbalize his thoughts, he was an embarrassment. It is sad when a Steve Stone can’t collect a regular check in this business and this guy can. Grade F

Chicago Bears

Radio: Jeff Joniak and Tom Thayer – This quietly has become a really solid partnership. When Hub Arkush was in the booth with them it was cumbersome. Ever since they made it a two man broadcast, it has been quite enjoyable. Joniak has grown and become a very solid broadcaster. His calling of the game strikes the perfect balance. He is definitely a fan but he doesn’t scream. He gets excited when the team does well and calls them out when they deserve it. Thayer has been solid ever since he got the gig. He passes his knowledge of the game onto the listeners in a way that even the most novice fan can understand the most difficult of football concepts. He is extremely knowledgeable and personable and together they make a great team. Grade A

Chicago Bulls

TV: Tom Dore and Johnny “Red” Kerr – They have been around awhile and gotten into a nice groove. Tom Dore, is a solid broadcaster who is somewhat underappreciated in this town. He has been doing a very good job for years. Johnny “Red” Kerr has gotten a little long in the tooth, but that doesn’t mean that he is bad. Back in the day he was a very good analyst. Nowadays, he shows his age a little and is a little slow in trying to verbalize his thoughts. Which makes the job Dore does all the much better. Grade B

Radio: Neil Funk and Bill Wennington – Funk and Wennington are a very nice team. Neil Funk has a voice made for radio and is one of the best in describing the goings on in a basketball game. About as solid of a play by play man as there is in the business. Wennington has made the transition from player to broadcaster look seamless. Big Bill knows a lot about the game and that comes through in his broadcast. He will tell you how it is and not sugarcoat it for you. This broadcast has really become quite good over the last couple of years. Grade A-

Top Concerts

After heading out a couple of weeks ago and finally seeing The D, I thought about the best shows I have ever seen. So here is a brief rundown of the top 5 concerts that I have attended.

Tenacious D 2006 UIC Pavilion – They simply rocked the fucking place. It has been a couple of weeks and I needed that time to put the show into perspective. They opened doing an acoustic set which was great. Then, they came back with a full band rocking out the rest of the show. Their encore of Tribute was reason enough to have seen them. I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my day and this one is now in my top 5.

The Who 1989 Alpine Valley – I have been a fan of the band forever so, it was kind of a dream realized to be able to see them live. They did a three hour show with Pete Townsend taking over a middle set to play some solo stuff. It was everything I could have wanted in a Who show.

Stevie Ray Vaughn 1990 Alpine Valley – We all went to see Eric Clapton and Vaughn was the opening act. I was already a fan, but many others in our group just had a passing interest in the man. After that show everyone would be a fan. There was no doubt after seeing both artists who put on the better show. Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble simply blew everyone who was there away. Sadly, two days later he would be dead in a tragic helicopter crash which made the show all the more memorable.

Living Colour 1989 The Rivera – My friend Chris had bought four tickets and offered one to me. At the time I had heard one song by the band and didn’t own their record yet. So, I went along not knowing what to expect and they blew my fucking socks off. The energy that night was amazing and they simply put together a set that you could not help but be blown away by. They made a fan out of me for life with that performance.

Peter Gabriel 1992 Rosemont Horizon – I went to the show with just my ex-girlfriend. The Rosemont Horizon is a shitty place to see a concert. The acoustics suck and it is very sterile. With all that said, this is still my favorite concert of all time. The man simply put on such a performance that I still can’t describe. A true musical genius and innovator.

Eat This!

My brother did this last year so, I am going to steal his idea. I admit that I am basically a meat and potatoes guy so with that said, here are the best meals I have eaten out at restaurants this year in no particular order.

Gnocchi in Vodka Sauce at Rosebud’s – I had been to a couple of the Rosebud locations located throughout the area and had never been impressed. Then I went to the O.G. location in Little Italy and realized what the fuss was all about. I eat a lot of pasta and for my money this place is the best of them all. It takes a lot to move me when it comes to Italian food but this place does it for me.

Steak Burrito at El Farol – OK, I admit that placing a burrito on a best meals list may seem a little unusual, but to me this was one of the best things I ate this past year. I used to be an El Farol guy back in the day. Then sometime along the way, I moved on and became an El Famous fan. I hadn’t been to El Farol in forever then one day I just decided to go back for nostalgia purposes. I was floored with how good it was. I have had a lot of burritos in my life and this is simply one of the best.

Orange Chicken at Hong Min – I like Orange Chicken. Sadly, most places that I order it, don’t know how to make it. My wife and I disagree on Hong Min. I think it is one of the best places to eat Chinese that I have been to. As an Orange Chicken devotee let me tell you this is one of the best I have ever had. The chicken is all white meat and their orange sauce is to die for.

Deep Dish Cheese and Sausage at Lou Malnotti’s – I was always a Gino’s East guy. While their pie is still good, Lou’s has simply over-taken them. Their butter crust that they offer, has become my favorite. Just the right amount of sauce, cheese and sausage. I could go on and on about this pizza. Thankfully there isn’t one that close to me or I would have to buy bigger pants.

Breaded Pork Cutlet at Szoraka’s – I like Polish food. I have been to a lot of the popular places such as Bobeck’s. While I don’t dislike those places, Szoraka’s in Justice despite its outward appearance serves some of the best food you will ever eat. Their breaded Pork Cutlet with the red potatoes and sauerkraut on the side is fricken out of this world. I know the place looks like kind of shady but, trust me the food rocks.

Perry’s Favorite at Perry’s Deli – All I can say is if you eat meat and don’t like Perry’s deli there is something wrong with you. Perry’s favorite is corned beef on rye with coleslaw, pepper jack cheese and Russian dressing on it. This thing is a monster and for my money there is no better sandwich on the planet. I will go down on this thing like Linda Lovelace on Harry Reams.

Chicken Kabobs and Dill Rice at Reza – There is a good argument between which Mediterranean restaurant is better on Clark, Reza or Andie’s. Since I am a meat eater I like Reza a little better. I could eat the dill rice alone as a meal though.

Beef Sandwich at Duke’s Beef – For my simple tastes nothing compares to my overall happiness like a Duke’s beef. I have consumed hundreds of them over the years and they still can’t be beat. Just juicy enough with just the right spices, if I am ever on death row this will be my last meal.

Cheeseburger and Strawberry Shake at Top Notch – Cheeseburgers are a dime a dozen. You can get one almost anywhere. For my money the best one I have ever had is at Top Notch on 95th St. in Oak Lawn. They cut their own potatoes and ground their own beef. As good as that is, the meal is not complete unless you compliment it with a shake. I am a strawberry fan but their chocolate is just as good. I need a towel to wipe up after eating there because I usually have reached climax.

Fried Chicken, Coleslaw and Corn Fritters at White Fence Farm – I should hate this place because it is owned by the Hastert family, but I can’t because their chicken is just too good. I have to put my political issues aside and feast on their wonderful bird. As good as the chicken is I could make a meal out of the fritters and slaw alone if I had to. The coleslaw is nice and vinegary. Those fritters, dusted with powdered sugar are sinful. I know the meal is about as unhealthy as one can get but sometimes you just need to spoil yourself.

Just Plain Gross

This should be a good time to be a Chicago Bears fan. They just clinched the NFC North division title with a 23-13 win over Minnesota yesterday. They are currently 10-2 and with a rather easy last four games remaining should wrap home field throughout the NFC playoffs. Still I, like most fans am very uneasy. The reason for this, is that the Quarterback play of this team has been horrendous the last two months.

The Bears need to decide something, and rather quickly I might add. They need to decide if they are in the business of winning a Super Bowl or developing Rex Grossman. There is no way you can do both. Grossman after some early season success has regressed beyond anyone’s wild imagination. Yesterday, they won despite of him. He completed 6 out of 19 passes for a whopping 34 yards while throwing three interceptions.

All of this led him to a QB rating of 1.2, which is pathetic. The thing is we have such a dominating defense and a special punt returner in Devin Hester that we overcame his ineptitude. However, that formula will not work against a quality opponent in the postseason. His confidence is at an all-time low. So, I like most sane Bears fans out there am calling for the immediate benching of Rex Grossman.

Our backup is Brian Griese. He is no world beater, but he is steady, which is all we really need. All the Bears require to win is a QB who does not turn the ball over and knows how to manage a game. In Griese you get exactly that. He won’t win you a lot of games but he won’t lose you any either. Chances like the Bears have with this dominant defense do not come along often. You have to strike when the iron is hot.

Sadly, Lovie Smith the coach of the Bears doesn’t see things this way, which will eventually be his and this teams undoing. I am not sure what he is watching, because it has become obvious that this team needs to make a change at the quarterback position. In his press conference yesterday he had an arrogant I know better then anyone else attitude about the situation. Listen, I understand that many people have a knee jerk reaction and want to bench the QB everytime he throws a pick. With that said, this is not a knee jerk reaction.

Grossman has thrown 14 picks in his last seven games. You can not win like that in the post season. There is an old saying those who don’t understand history are doomed to repeat it. It has been proven over and over again that if you have inconsistent play from the quarterback position in the playoffs then you will lose.

We have to admit to ourselves that the league has figured this kid out. If you blitz him he gets rattled and his mechanics get out of rhythm and he starts putting the ball up for grabs. It is like any sport. You start having some success and opponents are going to look for a weakness to exploit. Once they find it, it is up to that individual player to make an adjustment to counter that weakness. Michael Jordan when he came in the league was not a great jump shooter. So, teams would force him to the perimeter and make him take outside shots. What did Jordon do? He worked on his game to the point where he became a deadly jump shooter and it vaulted him to become the best ever.

Time will tell if Grossman ever makes that adjustment. Suffice it to say this year I don’t see it happening. Denver had the balls, to make a switch when they deemed their QB play to be sub-par. I personally don’t know if the Bears have the stones to do it. For Lovie to keep sticking with his well, we are 10-2 with Rex as our quarterback line, is faulty logic. We are 10-2 despite him. Grossman has had very little to do with it. Our defense is the reason we have that record. If we are serious about winning the Super Bowl then we have to make a change. If we don’t, mark my words we will not win one single playoff game.
